The plant

The objective of the Blog

Teach fifth-graders about the subject of the plant, from a very visual point of view so that they can learn to identify the photosynthesis process of plants.

 Introduction

This blog presents fifth-grade students with a face-to-face activity designed to explain the process of photosynthesis of a plant in a natural science class. This class is divided into four stages in order to demonstrate student learning through the presentation of the topic, followed by a practical component where students can test what they learned in the presentation, then there is a production module so that the student can carry out what they learned and practiced and evaluation to be able to provide feedback on the entire process Learning.

Presentation

Topic: The Plant

Age: Children Between 5 – 8 Years Old

Language Level: A1 – A2

Grade:  5th grade

In this natural science class about plants, we will learn about everything a plant needs to create
photosynthesis.

In this natural science class about plants, we will learn about everything a plant needs to create
photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the process in which green plants create energy from sunlight. This occurs from its cells in the leaves of plants and thus they produce oxygen and carbohydrates. Oxygen is released into the atmosphere that helps us humans breathe that oxygen and carbohydrates are transformed into simple sugars, which are used by the plant to grow.

The plants need some ingredients that are the following:

1. Chlorophyll:

It is a natural chemical that makes plants green, it is essential for the photosynthetic process that occurs when leaves absorb sunlight and photosynthesize.

2. Sunlight

The sun with its light produces energy allowing the first reaction in photosynthesis to start, which when sunlight excites chlorophyll, water is divided into oxygen and hydrogen, and oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

3. Water

Plants take in water from the soil through their roots and up the stem of the plant to reach the leaves, to be used as raw material during photosynthesis.

4. Carbon dioxide

It is a gas that is in the atmosphere around the plants and enters the plant through the stomata, which are openings, and thus this gas can reach the cells of the leaf, then it unites with the hydrogen produced in the first process. of light, to produce carbohydrates. Once photosynthesis has taken place, the oxygen produced also leaves the cells through the stomata.

I share with you the following video that help us to understand this process:

Practice

Materials Needed for Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants create energy from sunlight. It occurs at the cellular level in the leaves of plants and is the way in which they produce oxygen and carbohydrates. The oxygen is released into the atmosphere, and the carbohydrates, simple sugars, are used by the plant for growth. To carry out photosynthesis, green plants need some ingredients.

  • In our first activity to practice, the children need to: drag and drop the names on the correct position.

Production

Let's put together a field trip

We will visit a farm near the school where you can see different plants.

We will make 4 groups of 3 children each so that they can choose one of the ingredients that a plant needs to carry out photosynthesis:
Groups:

1. Chlorophyll
2. Sunlight
3. Water
4. Carbon dioxide

Then they should think about the best way in which they can expose the chosen topic to others so that everyone can observe it in the plants that we are going to see in nature so that they can understand and apply it to it. rest of their lives how photosynthesis works and the importance that this has on our planet earth.

Evaluation

To carry out the evaluation, the teacher will present these questions to the children and the children must be grouped in pairs to be able to choose a question and answer it together.

There are two options to carry out the evaluation, it can be with physical cards, the teacher must present the cards to each pair of students, these cards will go by colors, they are turned upside down, and the students will choose the card to answer that question according to the answer options.

These are the questions and the answer options:

1. What gas  do plants give off after conducting photosynthesis that humans/animals need in order to live?

  • Nitrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Carbon
  • Hydrogen

2. Plants take in ________from the air as one key ingredient for photosynthesis

  • oxygen
  • carbon dioxide
  • soil
  • sugar

3. The main source of energy for all life comes from ______.

  • The Earth
  • The sun
  • The moon
  • The food we eat/make

4. Why are producers (plants) important for all life on Earth?

  • They make our world more beautiful
  • They make the planet look green
  • They use carbon dioxide and give us oxygen
  • They provide shade for insects

5. What are the 3 key ingredients needed for photosynthesis

  • glucose, oxygen, carbon dioxide
  • water, soil, sunlight
  • carbon dioxide, water, glucose
  • sunlight, water, carbon dioxide

6. A student is collecting the gas given off from a plant in bright sunlight at a temperature of 27°C. The gas being collected is probably ________.

  • oxygen
  • carbon dioxide
  • ATP
  • glucose

7. Which of the following is not needed as a key ingredient for photosynthesis to occur?

  • sunlight
  • carbon dioxide
  • oxygen
  • water
